Save Big Without Sacrificing Style
In today’s tough economy, copious spending and lavish consumption have lost their appeal, as more and more brides scale back their wedding plans to meet strict budgets. Savvy spending has become all the rage – in fact, being “in the black” couldn’t be more fashionable. If you’re planning a wedding and think elegance and thriftiness can’t peacefully coexist, think again! Below are a few sensible tips for hosting a budget-minded celebration that will have your guests raving long after the last dance.
The Date. Caterers, DJs, rental companies, florists, and reception locales operate full-tilt from May – October, and are especially busy during prom season. Many vendors will offer discounts during their off-season months (November to April).
The Invitations. While engraved vellum invitations may be exquisite, they bear a hefty price tag that’s not easily justified when you’re planning on a modest budget. Save big while presenting an elegant first impression by printing invitations at home with a high-quality printer and professional cardstock.
The Food. Opt for buffet provisions rather than a formal sit-down meal. Another option is to plan your reception during non-customary meal times, such as late afternoon (before 4:00) or late evening (after 9:00) and serve only hors d’oeuvres or dessert.
The Libations. Bar tabs can add up quickly, especially if you’re inviting a boisterous crowd. Elegant options for curbing alcohol expenses include offering a signature cocktail in lieu of a full open bar or hosting a brunch reception. You might even consider forgoing alcohol altogether with a non-alcoholic reception.
The Dress. Keep an open mind about wedding dresses, hunting high and low for one that fits your budget as well as your personality. If you have your heart set on a particular designer, a seamstress may be able to recreate the look for much less. Explore options other than your local bridal shop, such as dress rental companies, online retailers, or second-hand sources. For a meaningful way to trim wedding dress expenses, consider donning your mother’s or grandmother’s gown—the sentimentality will be an added bonus.
The Decorations. Save time and money by planning church ceremonies during Christmas and Easter when the venue is already decorated. At the reception, decorate only key areas. Put the word out to family and friends that you’re on the lookout for wedding decoration donations; chances are someone has boxes of tea lights, glass globes, ribbons, or candles left over from their own celebration. Most will be all too happy to clear out their closets and make a contribution to the cause.
The Guest List. When brides are asked what they would have changed about their weddings, many express regrets over not having had a smaller, more intimate ceremony and reception. Save big with a smaller guest list; chances are, you won’t even miss who’s not in attendance.
Remember, there’s no reason you have to choose between having an elegant wedding or an affordable one. With some careful planning, you can have the magical day you’ve always dreamed of, at a price that won’t send you into sticker shock.
